Summary

Well-trained human experts can undoubtedly find the differences between whiskies, but it is still not an easy job for most consumers. For whisky authentication to become a feasible option for consumers, a rapid and simple on-site authenticity assessment solution, or an electronic nose (e-nose), has been developed. This talk will introduce a new e-nose prototype (NOS.E) developed by the NOS.E team to identify differences between whiskies. The discussion will cover both hardware design and classification algorithm development. It will also discuss the plan to improve the performance of the proposed solution, e.g., a portable carrier gas unit will be introduced in the NOS.E system to isolate the background odors coming from the environmental context.

Speakers: Dr. Seun Akeyo

Seun Akeyo is a Senior Engineer at Sargent & Lundy in Chicago, IL, USA, where he focuses on the transient modeling of power plants and high voltage transmission systems.

He received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky (UK) in 2020. His research at UK contributed to projects sponsored by DOE and in close collaboration with large utilities, especially LG&E-KU.

Dr. Akeyo has published more than fifteen peer-reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings, which include a Best Poster/Paper Award at the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications (ICRERA) in Birmingham, England, and the 2020 Best Paper Award – Third Prize from the IEEE Industry Application Society (IAS) RESCCS based on a paper published in IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, Vol. 55.
